Division Overview

Since 1921, Crawfordsville has been home to a facility for the RR Donnelley & Sons Company. It was the first facility outside of Chicago and was a vision of Thomas Elliott Donnelley.

The preface to "The Story of Crawfordsville - 75 Years", was written by James R. Donnelley, Grandson of T.E. Donnelley. Reading it will give you an understanding of the roll of the Crawfordsville facility in the history of the RR Donnelley & Sons Company.

In 1998, the Crawfordsville Division is made up of two separate facilities . Both are used for production of various types of books.

These two facilities specialize in receiving input from customers in both digital and conventional forms. The body of each book is printed on web offset presses. Jackets, covers, and cases can also be printed on UV sheetfed presses.

Books are bound in both facilities using numerous binding styles such as adhesive, smyth, saddlewire and Stout Bound. Stout binding, created and patented by Mark Stout, Journeyman Bindery Machine Operator in the Crawfordsville Division, is only one example of the ingenuity of RR Donnelley employees.

The scale of this operation is very large, with over 1.9 million square feet under roof. 1,900 employees work together to produce over 175,000,000 books each year.
