City/County Overview

Crawfordsville is a small town of 15,000 in west central Indiana. It is the county seat for Montgomery County, which has a total of 35,500 residents.

Crawfordsville was rated 43rd in the second edition of "The Best 100 Small Towns in America", written by Norman Crampton. This rating was based on factors such as per capita income, crime rate, annual growth rate, number of physicians, etc.

Indianapolis and Lafayette are 30 to 45 minutes away, making them both ideal commuting distances from Crawfordsville.

Chicago (165 miles), St. Louis (235 miles), Cincinnati (151 miles) and Louisville (151 miles) are all within a few hours of Crawfordsville.

In addition to a large agricultural base, Montgomery County has 35 major industrial businesses employing about 7,900 workers. These businesses make things such as travel trailers, bottle caps, industrial lighting, car parts as well as many other products.

During the past five years, unemployment rates have dipped as low as 1.9% in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County has three school corporations. Each has its own high school, middle school(s) and several elementary schools. These are:

Crawfordsville's High School was built in 1993. It is a state of the art facility featuring many of the latest technologies as well as one of the largest aquatic centers in Indiana.

Crawfordsville is also home to Wabash College, an all-male liberal arts institution founded in 1832. Wabash was recently named the best value of the nation's liberal arts schools by U.S. News and World Report.

The median home price in Crawfordsville is $65,000. The city's subdivisions offer both new and existing homes and available building lots in all price ranges. Apartment buildings and complexes are available in a wide price range. State income taxes are 3.4%. Sales tax is 5%.

Crawfordsville's crime rate is well below the national average. The national rate for serious crimes per 100,000 people is 5.242 while Crawfordsville's is only 2.584 per 100,000.

Crawfordsville is also served by St. Clare Medical Center. St. Clare has 24 hour physician coverage with ER, surgery and in-patient as well as out-patient services. They also are equipped with a heliport for emergencies requiring treatment at a larger facility in Indianapolis.
